Sun Protection

Accredited  Continuing Professional Development Program

Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Two out of every three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70 and sadly, more than 2000 Australians die from skin cancer each year.

Fortunately, skin cancer is almost entirely preventable, and nearly all skin cancers are directly related to UV exposure from the sun.

Pharmacists play an important role in raising awareness about sun protection within their communities. This may include educating and providing clear and accurate information to people who are taking medications that can lead to photosensitivity. Additionally, pharmacists can support adherence to treatment and provide advice for monitoring and managing adverse effects.

This course aims to provide pharmacists with greater awareness about the importance of supporting and promoting sun protection measures among the Australian community, including the appropriate selection and use of sunscreens.

Learning objectives

  • Discuss the importance of sun protection in the Australian climate
  • Describe the potential skin conditions associated with sun exposure and limited use of sun protective measures
  • Discuss different sunscreen formulations and correct administration techniques
  • Outline the patterns for use of sunscreens and strategies to promote appropriate uptake and use
  • Highlight the role of the pharmacist in promoting and supporting sun protective strategies in the community

This activity has been accredited for 1.5 hours of Group 1 CPD (or 1.5 CPD credits), suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan, which can be converted to 1.5 hours of Group 2 CPD (or 3 CPD credits) upon successful completion of relevant assessment activities.
